How to Edit & Embed Album-art for your MP3s

Posted in ID3 Tag, Media Players, Mp3, Mp3Tag, Softwares, Tech, Tutorials at 1:00 am by anonymous

This article shows you how to edit ID3 tag and embed album-art covers for your mp3 players (Ipod, Zen, Zune, Media Players, etc). First, you need an ID3 tag editor. I use Mp3Tag Editor, it can batch edit, rename tag/files, add album-art covers, and create playlist.

Mp3Tag Editor
Click on above image to view full.

Click here to download Mp3Tag Editor (ver 2.38 supports ID3 v1/2/2.3/2.4 and APE v1/2).

Table of Contents

  1. Setting options
  2. Edit tags
  3. Convert tags to filenames
  4. Adding album-art covers

1. Setting options

Go to Tools > Options. Go to Mpeg under Tags dropdown list. Match the check boxes with the below image.

Step 1

2. Edit tags
Select all or individual mp3s and edit the Title, Artist, Album, Year, Track, and Genre fields. When done press File > Save tag (Ctrl+S).

Step 2

Note: < keep > means you have selected multiple files and each files have different tag value.

3. Convert tags to filenames
Select Convert > Tag – Filename (Alt+1). This automatically renames all files to values of the tags. %track%, %artist%, %title% are dynamic variables for each tag.

Step 3

Tips: This is an optional step, renaming filenames will make your directory neater.

4. Adding album-art covers
Select View > Extended Tags (Alt+T). Choose the image file you want to assign as the album-art cover.

Step 4

Note: It is highly recommended to resize your album-art cover images to 200×200 or 100×100 pixels. Big images will take more time to load in your mp3 players and will deplete your mp3 player’s battery life more easily.

You are done! Add editing ID3 tags and add album-art covers is quite easy. Eventually, you might want to turn off prompting confirmation messages (after save, and after change) by going to Tools > Options > Messages. Too much prompting is quite distracting right? There are other functions that you might want to explore further. Have a nice day!

Where do you go to change the album art size to 200×200 or 100×100????

To resize pictures, one very easy and fast tool is (for all office useres) to right click on the file, “open with” –> “Microsofot picture manager” then on this fast and easy program you just click in “edit picture”, rezise and there you find cool features to change the size in pixels, as a percentage and other posibilities, it’s easy, but make sure to copy your files properly so you don’t damage the original (it has happened before)

      hope it’s somewhat useful…

I read the whole topic and there are no answers to your original question:
      How to resize embeded images.
More, how to do it to a lot of mp3s….

There are some devices that only allows a maximun of “x”kb size, or a x b pixels…

Hello jay, you can use graphic editing software like Photoshop, Fireworks, Gimp to edit the image size. Hope this helps. ;)

    Hello,

You don’t need to use any external software to resize the cover artworks. My piece of software can do this transparently. If you are interested to save some of your time while tagging please take a look here:

    http://www.tagtuner.com

The automatic resizing can be adjusted in the Options.

    • SullyPanda said,

No, you’re app does not resize embeded images.. nor it show its size, nor dimensions

yeah, well, yours has 29.95 reasons to choose a different program (not including tax) such as Mp3Tag Editor, which has no reasons to choose other programs.

Great article. I use Mp3tag as my ID editor and think it is a brilliant software. Makes life so easy !!

However, I don’t agree that 100×100 or 200×200 is good enough though but that’s just my view :)

i use a free software (Photofiltre => http://photofiltre.free.fr/) or HyperSnap to do my re-sizing… but I insist on 500×500 size

    :) :) :)

The bigger the image size, the more space it needs, hence it will make your mp3 slightly larger in size. Of cause, if u don’t mind the size, go ahead :)

  7. From the research I’ve done, 300 x 300 pixel images seem to be a common “standard”, but if you’re doing it for your own music collection, then it’s entirely up to you.

if your not using an ipod not too sure how slow it makes them but i get my album art from google images type name artist and album i have never missed one and i have a lot of albums i resize them to 500 x 500 as they display in wmp 11 the right size when album art is enabled as view
you can go to just under 600×600
best way to do it but you have to see full size view of the art in google not the thumbnail copy that then go to mp3 tag and select change directory fouth button from left select album folder in tools you can open this up to the sam folder each time saves a bit of clicking then selecct album hightlite all songs right clice select extended tag right clk where the cover gos if you already have one then select remove cover then selcet add cover and thy screen comes up you should of already copied the big art from google paste then highlite then click open and select ok the tracks will embed then

couple of tricks when searching album art open your media player and edit artist or album title then copy name and paste into google saves time typing or getting spelling wrong

if you want to add big art to wmp and you can only find smaller or larger pics then when you are paste the art into the folder paste it then before u select right click it and select edit then resize in percentage to around 500-580 x the same hint are 300×300 if you select 200 percent you get 600×600 you want to be slightly smaller so select 190 percent
    200 x 200 selcet 250percent

make sure u look at the kb in the art some are very high i use 20-100 if i can 50 is good quality remember though if you make it bigger the kb enlarges hope this helps

Thanks for your information on this blog. Just one thing I would choose to say is always that purchasing consumer electronics items from the Internet is not something new. The truth is, in the past 10 years alone, the market for online electronic products has grown noticeably. Today, you can find practically any specific electronic device and gizmo on the Internet, including cameras and camcorders to computer pieces and video games consoles.

    THIS.
Thanks for saying that. First I was going to add atwork, but now I changed my mind. Longer listening is more worth than see the atwork in your iPOD.

I have been using this software for the last 2 years and I must say I’m more than satisfied with It. I primarily use It to add album arts to my mp3s. Though It is also very useful to edit the tags. When you select a song the embeded album art shows in the lower left corner. Just right click over it and select remove if you intend to add another Image or select extract if you want to edit the existing image. The extracted image go to the folder where you have saved the song. If you want to add another image save the particular image in 1:1 aspect ratio, i.e. square image. After getting your Image ready again right click on the album art box and now select add album art which takes you to the folder where the mp3 is saved. Preferably save your Image In the same folder. Just select the image and click save. Don’t forget to click save in the tool bar after every action.
For editing images I prefer PhotoShop. I usually use 500 x 500 image size. 300 x 300 also gives you a descent resolution.
